2009, looking back...
Well, it’s been another fine year for Make Mine Music, with major releases for Piano Magic, their tenth full-length album “Ovations” featuring contributions from Brendan Perry and Peter Ulrich of Dead Can Dance. Glen Johnson of Piano Magic also released his debut solo album under his own name, a collection of electronic/acoustic songs at times reminiscent of early Leonard Cohen, and, in collaboration with ‘Victorian Music Machinist’ Plinth, “The Rest I Leave to the Poor” under his Textile Ranch moniker. Glen also appeared alongside Ben Holton of Epic45 and Lorraine Lelis (ex-Mahogany), as guest vocalists on Portal’s return after three years in the wilderness, the four-track “Options” EP. Autumn also saw the release of a new mini-album by Epic45, “In All the Empty Houses”, which built on the success of last year’s “May Your Heart Be The Map.” Make Mine Music also celebrated its 50th release with a low-price compilation CD bringing together tracks by the majority of artists who have recorded for the label over the last eight years. The year ended with the final release by Portal, the 100-track retrospective “Home Recording is Killing Music”, which was given away free as digital download.
